When I am reading a good book, my reality seems to fade away and it is replaced by a new world. I get lost in the stories, the mood, the atmosphere, and the characters in worthy novels. Sometimes, I even forget where I am. Which, yes, is much like texting and driving: very dangerous. I will look up from the pages and take a second to remember where I am and what I was supposed to be doing.
This exact experience happened to me today. Being the fantastic daughter that I am, I took my dad's car into the shop to get new tires. I have no qualms waiting at a tire place for hours...that is if I have a good book in hand. And today I did. I have been on a classics kick; so, I started Dracula by Bram Stoker. I must tell you that I am not very far in....but I am in enough to know that I like it. As I read, without interruptions, I kept getting more and more into the story. I had read up to a point where Dracula's brides were about to eat a man when SUDDENLY....a piece of paper was thrust in my face. To say the least, I jumped. The room irrupted with laughter, and a woman said, "Wow, she must have been wrapped up in that book." And I definitely was. The poor man just wanted to let me know that my car was ready and give me back my keys. But seriously, if a woman is reading DRACULA, DO NOT SHOVE A PIECE OF PAPER IN HER FACE. The results could be deadly...and yet, strangely hilarious. After I realized where I was, I took the piece of paper, and said thank you and goodbye to those in the room. Yep, good times had by one and all. The power of a good book is undeniable.
