So, this one time my friends Chelsea, Jeremy, and Myzzie Lynn came to visit...and it was "totally WICKED!" They started their journey in Palmyra, NY. They saw the pageant and the historical sites, and then they traveled down my way. The first day they were here we caught up, and we played pennies. If you really know my family, you know that we play the game pennies with anyone and everyone that comes to my home. If you do not know how to play...don't worry, my dad will teach you.
Anyway, the next day the gang and I visited West Point. If there is a college campus that I love as much as BYU, it is West Point. The campus is historical and breath taking. If only I could get into their library! Come on Cadets!
While we were at West Point, we took the official tour. Our tour guide told us quirky stories and facts about West Point. One of the stories she told us is about the statue below. Folklore says that if you spin the spurs on his boots at midnight before a big test, you will pass with flying colors. The fun part about this is that cadets are not supposed to be out of their rooms after 11:30! Our tour guide told us that school officials tend to look the other way during finals.
Our tour guide also told us that three times a week, all the students at West Point eat at the same time. 4,000 students are in and out within 25 minutes. Talk about having to stuff face quickly! Jeremy said that he could relate to that. Jeremy is in the army and has been deployed in Afghanistan and Korea. Right now he works at Fort Campbell in TN. (I think) Thank you Jeremy for protecting our rights to freedom!
(Rachel Clark, eat your heart out!)
The picture above depicts the organ in the West Point Chapel. It is one of the largest pipe organs in the U.S! Glorious!
Anyway, moving right along, the next day was the ward picnic, and HARRY POTTER! These will probably need their own post...but we will see if that happens. So, we will move onto Monday, when I took my friends on a small tour of the city.
After the museum, we went to see the LDS temple in Manhattan, and of course use the bathroom in the church building. If I had to pick a favorite building in Manhattan, the temple would be it. It is incredible to me that there can be so much chaos and noise outside, and inside the temple it is still, peaceful, and quiet.
After the temple, we went to visit Ground Zero. A place that Jeremy especially wanted to see. When we got there, I was amazed. I had visited a few years ago, and to be honest, there was nothing there but a big hole of desolation. And now, there is construction, and a building that is over 50 stories high. Now, that is a symbol of hope. The picture below is the building that stands where the towers once stood. I am not quite sure what they are going to call it. I think it is "freedom tower" or something freedom...but we will have to wait and see.
After visiting Ground Zero, we walked up Broadway and saw Times Square and some of the novelty stores. Overall, a very good day.
I have known Chelsea Kay Barzee Lynn since I was twelve years old. It was amazing to see her grown up with a husband and a two year old daughter. She has a wonderful family. I can't believe how old everyone is getting! I love you Lynn family! I already miss you like a fat kid on a diet misses cake!
